Oral health on the go

Van traveling through mountians

Summer is typically a time for travel – camping, cruises, road trips, you name it! While space for packing might be limited, be sure to bring your dental essentials to avoid issues and keep up with your routine so that you can make the most of your vacation.

Here is what to bring:

1) Your toothbrush and toothpaste

Pack your toothbrush and remember to bring a charger or change of batteries along if you have an electric one. Cover your toothbrush while it’s in your bag or suitcase, but allow it to air dry before packing it up because storing it wet allows bacteria to grow. If you forget toothpaste and aren’t able to get any, brush your teeth anyway. The mechanical action of brushing your teeth can help remove some of the food debris even without toothpaste.

Foldable, travel-size toothbrush

If space is limited and/or you are flying, bring a sample or travel size toothpaste. Make sure that it will be enough to last for the duration of your trip or bring an extra tube. There are also travel toothbrushes that are foldable or more compact that may be a better fit for luggage, or you can try a child-size brush, as long as it has soft bristles. Some brands also offer toothpaste tablets, which are easy to pack and lightweight, but check that they contain fluoride.

Remember to brush for 2 minutes twice a day, even if it is at different times of day than when you brush at home.

2) Dental floss

Most floss comes in a very small and lightweight container, so it's easy to bring along on your travels. There are also refillable floss picks or handles if this is your preferred way to floss. They are usually the same size as your toothbrush or even smaller. No matter how you get it done, it’s still crucial to floss your teeth once per day to clean where your brush can’t reach.

Dental insurance ID card

3) Your dental and medical insurance ID cards or information

We are sure that you will have safe and healthy travels, 🤞 but in case of an emergency, having your insurance information can be extremely helpful for getting care. Your dental ID card can be accessed/stored digitally, so you won’t even need to pack it as long as you have it saved on your phone. It’s best to download the app and your ID card before leaving home in case you run into issues with cell phone service on your journey.

4) Water/a water bottle

Staying hydrated, rinsing your mouth out after eating, and having access to clean water for brushing your teeth are just a few reasons why water/a reusable water bottle to fill is a traveling must-have.

5) Sugar-free gum

Gum will freshen your breath and can reduce snacking. It also helps increase saliva flow and protects your teeth from any acidic or sour foods that you consume. Chewing gum can also help to reduce or prevent ear pain and discomfort while flying.

6) First aid kit

In case of an emergency or incident, it’s good to have first aid available. Items like gauze, cotton balls, antiseptics, pain relievers, and bandages are typically included in a standard kit. If you have additional concerns about your oral health, you might also add temporary filling materials (drugstore dental cement) to use until you can get to a dentist in case you have damage to a tooth, filling or crown.

With this packing list, your next trip is sure to be full of smiles! 😁
